Andrei Rublev's Trinity Icon in Critical Condition After Monastery Display

The Trinity icon, a 15th-century masterpiece by Andrei Rublev, has reportedly deteriorated to a critical state after being moved to the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius in 2023. Museum experts had warned of the risks of displaying the fragile icon in a monastery, citing the need for controlled conditions. A climate-controlled display case installed in the iconostasis had been out of order for several months, causing the humidity to rise to 80%, rather than the required 50-55%. The icon's condition has been described as 'dying,' with the paint layer buckling and the wooden panels swelling due to the high humidity. A specialist from Germany attempted to repair the display case, but the equipment failed again after he left, and he cannot return due to 'difficulties in international relations. ' The icon has been removed from the iconostasis and is undergoing restoration by Tretyakov Gallery specialists.
