Myanmar Flood-Landslide 2026: Humanitarian Impact Increases
WHY IT MATTERS
The humanitarian impact of the flood-landslide event in Myanmar has increased significantly, with thousands of people affected and displaced, and critical infrastructure damaged, highlighting the need for continued humanitarian assistance and support.
What happened
A low-pressure system in late September 2026 brought heavy rainfall, strong winds, flooding, and landslides to southern Myanmar, particularly in Tanintharyi Region. The Myanmar Red Cross Society reported that approximately 49,371 people and 7,629 houses were affected, with 9,032 people temporarily displaced.
The most severe impacts were reported in Launglon Township, where over 400 households were affected and over 400 houses were destroyed. A total of 25 deaths and 11 injuries were reported.
Floods and landslides damaged roads, bridges, water sources, and other critical infrastructure, limiting access to essential services and humanitarian assistance.
