Nigeria’s First Ebola Case in Decade Likely Traced to Uganda, Not DRC
WHY IT MATTERS
Identifying the infection source helps prevent further transmission and shapes targeted containment efforts across the affected regions.
What happened
Nigeria has reported its first Ebola patient in more than ten years, a Ugandan‑born wife of a Swiss diplomat stationed in Abuja. Swiss officials say she did not travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the outbreak began in mid‑May, but was believed to have contracted the virus while traveling with her husband in Uganda.
The case marks the fourth African country to report Ebola since the outbreak started, following DRC, Uganda and Kenya. Health authorities across the continent are racing to determine how the infection entered Nigeria and to assess the risk of further spread.
The investigation will guide containment measures and inform international response strategies.
