NASA Calls on Commercial Space Industry to Build Private Space Stations for 2030
WHY IT MATTERS
The move could accelerate the transition from ISS to commercial habitats, ensuring continuous human research in orbit and opening new opportunities for private spaceflight.
What happened
NASA released a 360‑page request for proposals (RFP) on Friday, inviting U. S. commercial companies to design and build private space stations that could replace the International Space Station (ISS) by 2030.
The RFP, which includes a cover letter outlining NASA’s goal of sustaining a human presence in low‑Earth orbit for science and exploration, is open to any U. S. contractor.
Industry responses are due by December 8, with NASA planning to select at least two contractors in this round and make a final decision in April. The solicitation marks a significant shift toward commercial solutions for long‑term orbital habitats.
