Cash’s return brings deep experience to a center pivotal for Artemis and future Mars missions, ensuring continued propulsion excellence and workforce development.
What happened
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman announced that Stephen Cash will assume the role of director of the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, effective Oct. 19.
Cash, a veteran NASA engineer who began his career at Marshall in 1982, returns after a 34‑year tenure that included leading the Space Shuttle Propulsion Office and directing the Safety and Mission Assurance Directorate. He will oversee more than 5,000 civil‑service and contractor employees and a portfolio that includes propulsion, space systems, scientific research, and technology development.
Marshall is a key partner in the Artemis program, managing the Space Launch System and Human Landing System, and is expanding its work on nuclear power and propulsion for future Mars exploration. Cash’s experience and technical judgment are expected to guide the center into its next chapter.
