NASA's Curiosity Mars Rover Reaches Elevation Milestone
WHY IT MATTERS
This achievement marks a significant step in the Curiosity mission, which aims to explore the Martian geology and understand the planet's history.
What happened
NASA's Curiosity Mars rover has reached a significant elevation milestone, capturing a panoramic view of the Gale Crater floor on September 5, 2026.
The rover, which has been climbing the lower foothills of Mount Sharp since 2014, set the milestone by reaching 1 kilometer of elevation above the crater floor just nine days prior.
The panoramic image, made up of 95 individual images, provides a detailed view of the geologic layering inside a nearby sand ridge and the size and composition of its sand grains.
