NASA's Hubble Prepares Roman for Gravitational Lensing
WHY IT MATTERS
These observations will help scientists better understand dark matter and its impact on the universe, ultimately contributing to a more accurate understanding of the cosmos and its mysteries.
What happened
NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has captured a series of gravitational lensing images in preparation for science with the new Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. These images showcase the bending and magnification of light around foreground galaxies, allowing researchers to study dark matter and its role in the universe.
By analyzing the distortion of background galaxies, scientists can determine the mass of the foreground galaxies and the amount of dark matter they contain.
Hubble's observations will help lay the groundwork for future Roman observations, which will provide a greater sample of gravitational lenses and a more comprehensive picture of the cosmos.
