What happened
On the night of September 15, NATO fighter jets from an Italian base in Šiauliai intercepted and destroyed a drone that breached Lithuanian airspace. The strike marks the first time a drone has been downed in the country’s history, according to LRT.
The drone entered airspace near midnight, prompting an air‑raid alert across Vilnius, Trakai, Elektrėnai and Kaunas districts. It was shot down between Kaunas and Kaišiadorys, about 100 km northwest of Vilnius. The incident disrupted airport operations, delaying several international flights.
Preliminary reports suggest the drone may have carried explosives, but ownership remains unknown. Lithuania has previously issued alerts for drones, including Ukrainian drones diverted by Russian electronic warfare. The event underscores the growing threat of unmanned aircraft to national security.
