Nepal Flash Floods: UN Women Highlights Protection Concerns for Women and Marginalized Groups

In the aftermath of flash floods in Nepal, UN Women has issued a Gender Alert highlighting significant protection and inclusion concerns for women and marginalized groups. Overcrowding, lack of privacy and safe spaces, and inadequate WASH facilities are among the issues affecting holding centers and temporary shelters. Women and girls are at risk of gender-based violence and exploitation, while those with disabilities face barriers to access. Maternal and reproductive health services, food and nutrition, and livelihoods are also in short supply. The Alert emphasizes the critical role of women's rights organizations in humanitarian response and calls for their meaningful involvement in assessments, decision-making, and recovery efforts. Key recommendations include ensuring safe shelters, strengthening GBV services, and collecting sex- and age-disaggregated data. UN Women is supporting the government-led response through coordination, advocacy, and partnerships with women's rights organizations and other community groups.
