Flood‑affected Nepal: Girls face heightened trafficking and violence risks one month after disaster

A month after Nepal’s flash floods that killed at least 1,400 people and left about 5,700 missing, girls in displacement sites are at increased risk of trafficking, violence, exploitation and child marriage. About 1,000 people remain in communal holding centres where privacy and safety are compromised, and many girls live in tents with inadequate lighting. Save the Children, working with local authorities and police, is intensifying protection measures, including monitoring, awareness‑raising on gender‑based violence, expanded psychosocial support, and case‑management services. The organisation also supports police checkpoints to identify trafficking and exploitation, linking at‑risk children and families to social‑protection services. These efforts aim to mitigate the compounded risks created by displacement, loss of education, and existing gender inequalities.
