New NZ ACOPs Clarify Farm Health and Safety Duties Ahead of 2027 Legislation

New Zealand’s Workplace Relations and Safety Minister Brooke van Velden unveiled two Approved Codes of Practice (ACOPs) today that will guide farms in meeting their health and safety duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015. The codes – Roles and Responsibilities in Agriculture and Safe Farm Vehicle Operation – become effective 1 April 2027, the same day the Act’s amendments take effect. They clarify overlapping duties among farmers, managers, contractors and suppliers, and give practical steps for managing vehicle‑related risks, such as vehicle selection, condition checks and risk reassessment. While not mandatory, following an ACOP can provide a safe‑harbour, evidence that a business is complying with its legal obligations. WorkSafe will support the sector in applying the new guidance.
