European Space Agency Unveils New ‘Brain’ for Galileo Satellites
WHY IT MATTERS
The enhanced signal generation will deliver more accurate positioning and timing, benefiting navigation, finance, telecom, and national security applications worldwide.
What happened
The European Space Agency announced that twelve new Galileo Second Generation (G2) satellites will be added to the existing constellation over the next few years. These satellites feature a redesigned signal generation module—referred to as the spacecraft’s ‘brain’—which is expected to enhance the system’s positioning, navigation, and timing performance.
The upgraded signal architecture will provide more precise and reliable data for users worldwide, potentially improving everything from everyday navigation apps to critical timing services used in finance, telecommunications, and national security.
The G2 satellites represent a significant step forward in satellite navigation technology, building on the robust foundation of the current Galileo fleet.
