Carnival Cruise Line Launches New Loyalty Program
WHY IT MATTERS
The new program's emphasis on spending requirements may impact customers who were accustomed to earning status through inexpensive sailings, potentially leading to a downgrade in status for some loyal customers.
What happened
Carnival Cruise Line has introduced a new loyalty program, Carnival Rewards, which replaces the 14-year-old Carnival VIFP Club program. The new program brings significant changes, including a shift from a days-based system to a spend-based system and the elimination of 'status for life' for most customers. Instead, customers will earn status for a two-year increment and then lose it unless they requalify.
The program also offers a new points system, allowing customers to cash in points for a wide range of amenities as soon as they start cruising. Customers can earn points through spending on eligible Carnival purchases, casino play, and the new Carnival Rewards Mastercard.
The new program has been met with controversy, with some customers expressing concerns about the increased spending requirements for status. However, Carnival has offered a transition period for previous status holders, allowing them to retain their status through January 1, 2029.
