Auckland Reinstates Council Control Over Transport System

From 30 September 2026, Auckland’s transport governance, planning and delivery arrangements shift to the Auckland Council, restoring democratic accountability. Transport Minister Chris Bishop and Mayor Wayne Brown announced that most local transport functions—policy, planning, project delivery, infrastructure maintenance and road‑controlling authority—will now be managed by the council. Auckland Transport will become a smaller, council‑controlled entity focused on public transport services. The reforms also grant local boards new powers over local roads, speed limits, parking and cycleways, and establish the Auckland Regional Transport Committee to develop a 30‑year transport plan. The changes aim to align central and local priorities, improve accountability, and support Auckland’s growth and quality of life.
