New Nationwide Rural Recycling Scheme to Boost Farm Plastic Recovery
WHY IT MATTERS
The new system will markedly raise the amount of farm plastics recycled, cutting the volume sent to landfills, burial or on‑farm burning and creating a more sustainable circular economy for rural New Zealand.
What happened
The New Zealand Government announced a nationwide Rural Recycling Scheme that will begin on 1 March 2027, replacing current voluntary programs. The scheme, designed with industry and farmer input, will be managed by the not‑for‑profit Agrecovery Foundation and will expand a take‑back network from about 240 sites to accommodate higher volumes.
Producers will pay a small fee on farm plastic products—such as agrichemical containers, bale wrap and silage sheet—to fund free, nationwide collection services.
The program will also offer take‑back for forestry, manufacturing, hospitality, tourism, sport, local authorities and households’ pest and weed control items, creating a single, streamlined recycling channel for all rural plastics.
