A PNAS study finds the rainforest is more fire‑resilient than expected and shows no sign of shifting to savanna, but notes that the new ecosystems emerging from recovery are more vulnerable to future climate shocks. A May Nature paper links ongoing deforestation to rising drought frequency and intensity, warning that these changes could push the biome to a tipping point by 2040.
Senior INPE researcher Luciana Gatti adds that the climate has already altered enough that typical rainforest trees can no longer thrive under current water and temperature conditions.
