New Urban Poor Commissioner Faces Criticism Over Lavish Lifestyle
WHY IT MATTERS
The appointment of Commissioner Canlas raises concerns about the qualifications and dedication required for the position, which serves as a direct link between the urban poor and the government.
What happened
Zofia Canlas, a 27-year-old biology graduate, was appointed as the new commissioner of the Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor (PCUP). Social media users criticized her lavish lifestyle, citing photos of her traveling to Italy, Spain, France, Greece, and the United States.
The Palace defended her, stating that she has served as the commission's chief of staff since July 2025 and has the ability to work and serve the people. Critics argue that the position requires someone with credentials and pro-people qualities, as it involves dealing with informal settlers.
The PCUP's mandate includes conducting consultation with and preparation of informal settler families, accrediting urban poor groups, and monitoring demolition and eviction.
