New Zealand and Brazil Launch Trade and Investment Dialogue
WHY IT MATTERS
The dialogue signals a strategic partnership that could boost bilateral trade, diversify export markets, and provide stability for businesses amid global trade uncertainty.
What happened
New Zealand and Brazil have agreed to establish a Trade and Investment Dialogue aimed at expanding trade and investment between the two nations. Trade Minister Todd McClay said the dialogue would strengthen cooperation on trade and economic issues, including WTO reform, and deepen the existing partnership that has evolved over 60 years.
The first meeting will be scheduled after Brazil’s second round of elections on 25 October and New Zealand’s election on 7 November. Two‑way trade in the year ending March 2026 reached NZ$528 million, with New Zealand exporting NZ$205 million in travel services, pharmaceuticals, fruits and nuts, mechanical and electrical machinery, and Brazil exporting NZ$323 million in coffee, tea, spices, wood pulp, pharmaceuticals and animal feed.
The dialogue will also explore ways to broaden the trade relationship through negotiations.
