New Zealand Takes Lead in Pacific Islands Forum Troika Ahead of 2027 Auckland Summit

New Zealand has joined the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Troika, taking an expanded leadership role as it prepares to host the 2027 Forum in Auckland. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said the move places New Zealand at the centre of regional decision‑making for the first time in more than a decade. The Troika, which also includes Palau and Solomon Islands, will provide political oversight and strategic guidance on key priorities such as economic prosperity, regional security and resilience. Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters highlighted the benefits of face‑to‑face discussions in Palau and pledged that the 2027 Leaders Meeting will deliver tangible results. Luxon also confirmed that Papua New Guinea will resume direct flights from Port Moresby to Auckland in November, a service last operated 26 years ago.
