NGOs Urge Vantara to Permanently End Wild Animal Imports
WHY IT MATTERS
The fate of endangered species and animal welfare hangs in the balance as Vantara's decision to import animals from accredited facilities raises concerns about the effectiveness of these measures and the potential risks to the animals involved.
What happened
A coalition of 27 global wildlife conservation and animal welfare organizations has called on Vantara, a billionaire-run zoo in India, to permanently end all wild animal imports.
This comes after Vantara announced a 12-month moratorium on animal imports, backdated to June 5, 2026, and a plan to import animals only from recognized and accredited facilities after the moratorium expires.
The NGOs have offered Vantara suggestions for strengthening its practices and improving outcomes.
