Cyprus EOA Chief Calls for Unified Water Authority

Nicosia district local government organisation chief Constantinos Yiorkadjis has proposed the creation of a single, independent water authority to oversee the entire water chain nationwide. This authority would manage resources, pricing, and infrastructure investment. Yiorkadjis highlighted the need for a unified network of rainwater pipes, citing the recent bad weather as an example of the current system's shortcomings. Repair works on a culvert in Digenis Akritas are set to begin next month, while a separate study on stormwater drains is progressing. Discussions are underway with municipalities to formalise cooperation agreements during emergencies. Yiorkadjis also welcomed government plans for new desalination units but stressed the need for a broader strategy to reduce rainwater loss.
