Nigeria Grapples with Cholera Outbreak and Ongoing Displacement

Nigeria has seen a significant surge in suspected cholera cases, with over 65,000 reported across 35 states and 195 Local Government Areas since the start of the year. Borno State remains the epicenter, with Maiduguri, Monguno, and Jere being the hardest hit. Meanwhile, severe violence and herder-farmer conflicts have caused widespread displacement, affecting women and children most. Heavy rainfall in mid-to-late August triggered severe flooding, destroying property and inundating health infrastructure. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and partners have provided emergency support, including 150 dignity kits, sexual and reproductive health services, and gender-based violence prevention and response services. In August, they reached 8,769 people with sexual and reproductive health services and 5,993 people with gender-based violence services across 60 health facilities and 34 safe spaces.
