Nobel Committee Leaders and Amnesty Secretary General to Address AI and Human Rights at Manila Summit
WHY IT MATTERS
The summit underscores the need to embed human rights in AI governance, ensuring technology supports peace and democracy rather than undermining them.
What happened
On November 21, the Social Good Summit in Manila will host Jørgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, and Kristian Berg Harpviken, director of the Nobel Institute, alongside Amnesty International Secretary‑General Agnès Callamard. The trio will discuss how generative artificial intelligence reshapes peace, democracy, and human rights, echoing calls from the UN General Assembly for technology to be governed with humanity at its core.
The summit, titled “WE, THE HUMANS: Reclaim Our Future,” also features panels with UN AI experts, a conversation between Nobel laureate Maria Ressa and Yuval Noah Harari, and hands‑on masterclasses from Rappler’s RappLearn.
Proceeds support Rappler’s investigative journalism and AI‑literacy programs.
