Norway Provides NOK 10 Million to Support Colombia Earthquake Response

Norway has allocated 10 million Norwegian kroner (NOK) from its humanitarian reserve to strengthen local response efforts in Colombia following a devastating earthquake that struck the region earlier this week. The funds will be channeled through the Red Cross Movement and are earmarked for emergency healthcare for the several thousand injured, provision of clean water, disease‑prevention measures, temporary shelter, and essential household items for those who have lost their homes. Additional support will cover protection work, restoration of telecommunications, and the reconnection of families separated by the disaster. This contribution supplements Norway’s earlier support through humanitarian relief funds, which together with the United Nations and Red Cross emergency relief funds have already contributed NOK 60 million. Minister of International Development Åsmund Aukrust highlighted the importance of swift, locally led action, noting that rapid access to clean water, sanitation, and healthcare is critical to prevent further loss of life. By drawing on reserve funds set aside at the beginning of the year, Norway can deploy resources without delay, reinforcing its strategy of empowering local organizations such as the Colombian Red Cross to deliver timely assistance in areas where access and communication were already challenging.
