Norway's Aid Budget Falls Short of Target Amid Rising Revenues
WHY IT MATTERS
This decision may signal a shift in Norway's humanitarian tradition and could have significant implications for global aid efforts, particularly for those affected by conflicts and crises.
What happened
The Norwegian government's proposed state budget for 2027 has failed to meet the longstanding target of allocating one per cent of Gross National Income to international aid. This decision comes at a time when Norway's revenues are rising and global aid cuts are leaving millions of people displaced by wars without shelter, food, and education.
The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has expressed disappointment and concern, calling on the Norwegian Parliament to increase budget allocations to meet the 1 per cent target and prioritize emergency aid for those in need. The NRC notes that other donors, including the US, UK, and Germany, have reduced their aid budgets, leading to a reduction in humanitarian support.
The global aid funding delivery rate is currently at 42 per cent, leaving millions without support.
