Offshore wind farms are expanding rapidly, a trend many experts say is essential for meeting climate goals. Yet the industry’s growth brings a spectrum of ecological risks that must be managed.
The structures can serve as de‑facto marine reserves, limiting harmful fishing and providing artificial reefs that attract sharks, rays, and crustaceans. However, construction and operation threaten birds and bats through collision and habitat loss, and marine mammals may alter their behavior or avoid turbines.
A case in point is the Berwick Bank Wind Farm near Bass Rock, Scotland, where the world’s largest northern gannet colony and other seabirds—guillemots, kittiwakes, razorbills, and puffins—face significant impacts. Over the last twenty years, the number of offshore farms has surged, underscoring the urgency of balancing renewable energy gains with marine conservation.
