Regular Church Attendance Linked to More Frequent and Satisfying Sex Among Married Couples
WHY IT MATTERS
Understanding factors that enhance marital intimacy can guide couples and counselors in fostering healthier relationships and addressing the broader trend of declining sexual engagement.
What happened
A new Institute for Family Studies report found that married adults who attend church regularly report higher sexual frequency and greater satisfaction than those who attend less often or not at all. The analysis drew on the 2026 IFS Religion and Family Survey of 3,125 married adults, the General Social Survey, and a survey of 1,219 Catholic campus ministry alumni.
Among couples aged 20 to 54, 62% of regular churchgoers had sex at least once a week versus 48% of non‑religious spouses. Catholics and Protestants who attended services regularly were also more likely to rate their sex lives as “excellent” or “very good.”
The study notes that the association persists after controlling for demographics, though causality cannot be established. Experts suggest shared spiritual practices may strengthen emotional connection and openness, contributing to a more active sex life.
