New Zealand Sets Aside Areas for Iwi Aquaculture in Marlborough
WHY IT MATTERS
This move supports the growth of open ocean aquaculture in Marlborough, potentially generating export income and providing stable jobs for the region.
What happened
The New Zealand Government has designated two Aquaculture Settlement Areas (ASAs) in Marlborough, totaling 5936ha, to ensure iwi have opportunities to contribute to the region's open ocean aquaculture growth. The areas, east of D'Urville Island and in Cloudy Bay, will be used for potential marine farms following negotiations between iwi and the Crown.
Current fishing activities within the ASAs remain unaffected, and any aquaculture activities will require regulatory approval and consenting. Minister Shane Jones expects Marlborough to be at the forefront of the sector's growth, driven by demand for sustainable kaimoana.
The establishment of the ASAs is an important step in ongoing negotiations with iwi, which could result in significant export income and job creation.
