OpenAI Expands ChatGPT Ads to Include Visuals
WHY IT MATTERS
The rollout signals a shift toward visual advertising in AI tools, potentially altering user experience and raising questions about ad relevance, privacy, and the balance between free and paid services.
What happened
OpenAI is testing a new ad format in ChatGPT that will display images of sponsored products and services on users’ screens. The visual ads will appear when users generate images, and they will be displayed in a separate section that does not influence the model’s responses.
The company first introduced ads in February, which were limited to a company name, logo and link beneath the chat. The new format will be rolled out in the United States later this month and will not be shown to subscribers of ChatGPT Plus, Pro or other paid tiers.
The move expands OpenAI’s monetization strategy and could change how users interact with the AI.
