Gaza Displaced Populations Face Prolonged Protection Risks Amid Heat, Water Shortages

Protection monitoring for Gaza’s displaced communities shows risks remain severe and interconnected. Families live in deteriorating tents under extreme summer heat, with limited safe water, poor sanitation, and inadequate waste management. Children, women, older persons and people with disabilities report heightened health concerns and privacy barriers. Economic pressure forces households to borrow, buy on credit, cut spending or sell assistance to meet basic needs. Education is disrupted, and young people shoulder more household duties, reducing future prospects. Tensions rise within families and communities as resources dwindle. Despite these challenges, informal networks—family ties, community committees, volunteers, women’s and youth groups—continue to provide critical support and help manage tensions. The Protection Monitoring System records these trends through key informant interviews and focus group discussions, informing response planning.
