New Zealand Government Signs 10‑Year City and Regional Deal to Drive Growth in Otago Central Lakes
WHY IT MATTERS
The Deal addresses the pressure of rapid population and tourism growth in Otago Central Lakes, ensuring infrastructure, services and economic diversification keep pace and benefit residents and investors alike.
What happened
The Government has signed a City and Regional Deal with Queenstown Lakes District Council, Central Otago District Council and Otago Regional Council, creating a 10‑year partnership that aligns with a 30‑year vision for the region. The Deal focuses on housing, transport, health, energy and economic development, building on the Queenstown Joint Housing Action Plan and NZTA’s Whakatipu Strategic Network Plan.
It also supports reliable electricity transmission, a clinical services plan, and diversification into film, technology and renewable energy.
An Otago Central Lakes Deal Oversight Board will monitor progress, and an Implementation Plan will be drafted within six months to guide delivery and reporting.
