Cyprus Limassol Theatre Ownership Dispute
WHY IT MATTERS
The dispute highlights the prevailing socialist thinking in Cyprus' political establishment, where arts and theatres are controlled by central authorities and funded by taxpayers.
What happened
The Limassol municipality has requested ownership of the Rialto theatre from the state, citing that it belongs to the people of Limassol. The finance ministry has agreed to the transfer, but the council of ministers has twice failed to approve the proposal.
The municipality is willing to cover 50% of the theatre's running costs, but critics argue that municipalities are not well-equipped to run theatres and may rely on taxpayer funding. A former Akel deputy suggests that an agency representing the town, such as the municipality, could be a suitable owner.
However, leasing the theatre to a private company may be a more viable option, allowing it to remain in Limassol while providing varied entertainment and avoiding taxpayer burden.
