Newcastle Disease Outbreak Declared State of Animal Health Emergency in Southern Brazil
WHY IT MATTERS
The outbreak threatens the poultry sector, could disrupt trade, and underscores Brazil’s commitment to global disease surveillance.
What happened
On October 19, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock confirmed an outbreak of Newcastle disease at a turkey slaughterhouse in Nova Itaberaba, Santa Catarina. In response, the federal government declared a 60‑day state of animal health emergency covering Nova Itaberaba, Águas Frias, Coronel Freitas, and Nova Erechim.
The Official Veterinary Service shut down the facility and halted poultry transport. Authorities will implement control, containment, and eradication measures following the Contingency Plan for Avian Influenza and Newcastle Disease.
Brazil has notified the World Organization for Animal Health and its trading partners to uphold international transparency commitments.
