New Zealand Lowers Overseas Investment Fees to Boost Business Growth
WHY IT MATTERS
The reduction in fees will make New Zealand a more attractive destination for international investment, potentially leading to increased business growth, higher productivity, and higher-paying jobs.
What happened
The New Zealand government has announced a reduction in fees for overseas investment applications, making it easier and more attractive for investors to bring capital into the country. From September 11, 2026, the initial national interest risk assessment fee will decrease from $22,800 to $16,960, while mandatory stage two assessment fees for non-New Zealand government investors will fall from $83,700 to $61,800. This change aims to remove unnecessary barriers to investment and make New Zealand a more attractive place to do business.
The government has already streamlined the Overseas Investment Act, introducing a risk-based national interest test and reducing unnecessary checks on low-risk investment applications. The new regulations will also allow Land Information New Zealand to waive, discount, or refund fees in exceptional circumstances.
The government has met its target assessment timeframes for new investment pathways, with business and production forestry investments now approved in just four working days. This change is expected to unlock New Zealand's potential by providing access to capital and technology that grows businesses, enhances productivity, and supports high-paying jobs.
