Cyprus Parents Threaten Action Over Unsafe Ypsonas Schools

Parents’ associations in Ypsonas have lodged a formal complaint with the labour inspection department after discovering that prefabricated and deteriorating classrooms are being used for 2,682 children. The associations say the conditions are dangerous and that the area, which is rapidly developing, lacks sufficient school capacity. Only one lyceum in the district operates with 12 mobile classrooms, while a third nursery and primary school rely on unsuitable prefabs. The education ministry has until September 10 to provide written commitments, including specific dates for upgrading the third nursery and primary schools, constructing a fourth nursery and primary school, a second gymnasium, and a second lyceum. If the ministry fails to respond, the parents plan to report the situation to the EU and will have their children skip the first two school periods on September 14. The committee also demands health and safety guarantees, suitability certificates, and full fire‑safety for the prefabs until new projects are completed.
