Parliament Examines Bills to Speed Up Civil Service Hiring

Cyprus's Parliament is reviewing three government bills aimed at streamlining the hiring process for civil servants. The proposed legislation would change the way candidates are assessed and positions are filled, with the goal of making the process more effective. Key changes include conducting the general written exam after vacancies are published, publishing all vacancies in the first two months of the year, and allowing candidates to indicate their order of preference for positions. The Public Service Commission's Giorgos Papageorgiou urged MPs to pass the legislation, citing a significant drop in appeals against hiring decisions. However, the Isotita union representing civil servants expressed concerns, stating they were not consulted on the bills and that they affect temporary employees who may wish to apply for permanent positions.
