New Zealand Launches $900,000 Youth Development Initiative in Rotorua

The New Zealand Government has committed nearly $900,000 to support over 400 at‑risk young people in Rotorua. Youth Minister James Meager announced a partnership with Digital Natives Academy, providing $330,000 of government funding and an additional $330,000 from The Spark Foundation, Bay Trust, Hoku Foundation and Rotorua Energy Charitable Trust. The Academy will run two one‑year programmes: a digital‑technology pathway for ages 12‑15 to boost school engagement, and a career‑transition pathway for ages 15‑24 featuring mentoring, job shadowing, work trials and paid internships. A separate $105,000 grant from Te Puna Ariki Charitable Trust, combined with $130,000 from local trusts, will fund mentoring and work‑readiness activities for ages 12‑24. These investments aim to improve education outcomes and employment prospects for Rotorua’s youth, aligning with government targets for demonstrable success.
