Cloudflare Launches Pay‑Per‑Use Beta to Monetize AI Use of Publisher Content
WHY IT MATTERS
It gives publishers a new revenue stream for AI‑driven content use, while simplifying licensing for AI firms and ensuring transparent, timely payments.
What happened
Cloudflare has begun a beta of its Pay‑Per‑Use program, allowing publishers to earn money when AI products actually use their content. Under the model, an AI company proposes a price for a specific use—such as returning an excerpt or shaping a recommendation—and reports each use via a single API.
Cloudflare bills the buyer and pays the publisher, who can track usage and earnings in a dashboard. Publishers can accept or decline offers and set different prices for different uses, while buyers gain a single integration to access multiple sites that have agreed to the terms.
The beta aims to test whether this economic layer can scale and provide reliable, timely payments.
