Pentagon Reinstates Mandatory Testosterone Testing for Male U.S. Troops Aged 30+
WHY IT MATTERS
By expanding mandatory screening, the Pentagon may increase treatment rates and readiness, yet it also heightens concerns about medical safety, resource use, and the need for updated female guidance.
What happened
The Pentagon has reinstated a mandatory testing program for testosterone deficiency among male U. S. service members aged 30 and older, effective immediately.
The program will be integrated into periodic health assessments and annual physical examinations, with younger members eligible for screening on request or when clinically indicated. The guidance, issued after a temporary rescission in early September to allow updates, establishes uniform screening and treatment pathways for men; a separate directive for female service members will follow later. Medical experts caution that inappropriate testosterone prescriptions can raise infertility risks and other health problems.
The move comes amid recent FDA changes that removed a boxed cardiovascular warning for testosterone products in men, though blood‑pressure warnings remain. The program had previously included women through questionnaires, but the new approach focuses solely on men for now.
