New Zealand Expands Funded Medicines in Community Pharmacies
WHY IT MATTERS
This expansion of funded medicines in community pharmacies is a step towards improving access to healthcare for New Zealanders, particularly in rural and remote areas, and reducing the cost of primary care for families.
What happened
The New Zealand Government has announced an expansion of funded medicines that community pharmacies can provide. From today, pharmacies can supply a wider range of medicines without a prescription, including treatments for children with mild dermatitis, skin infections, oral thrush, and vaginal thrush, as well as selected oral contraceptives.
This move aims to improve access to timely and quality healthcare close to home, particularly for rural and remote communities.
Associate Health Minister David Seymour and Health Minister Simeon Brown say this is a common-sense approach that makes life easier and more affordable for many families.
