Philippines University Unveils Commercial‑Ready Electric Tricycles
WHY IT MATTERS
The availability of locally produced electric tricycles could lower transportation emissions, boost the domestic EV industry, and provide affordable, cleaner mobility options for Philippine communities.
What happened
Cagayan State University (CSU) announced that its locally developed electric tricycle prototypes are now available to commercial investors, marking the first step toward mass production in the Philippines. The announcement came during the Sustainability Expo 2026 in Manila, where the university’s ElectroMobility Research and Development Center (EMRDC) displayed the vehicles and outlined plans for scaling up manufacturing.
The prototypes, designed for urban and rural transport, feature battery‑powered drivetrains that aim to reduce emissions and operating costs compared to conventional motorbike tricycles. By opening the technology to private investors, CSU seeks to spur domestic production, create jobs, and expand the country’s clean‑transport portfolio.
The move follows growing government interest in electrifying public transport and aligns with national targets for reducing greenhouse‑gas emissions.
