What happened
Poland has successfully created a tangible market for hydrogen buses, a goal long championed by advocates. Public subsidies enabled the purchase of 153 hydrogen buses, 140 of which were already in operation by April 2026, and supported the development of refueling infrastructure and renewable‑hydrogen projects.
Despite this growing demand, Polenergia has chosen not to supply hydrogen to the country’s fleet, leaving a gap between the burgeoning market and available supply.
The move underscores the challenges of aligning domestic demand with supplier commitments as Europe accelerates its transition to low‑carbon public transport.
