Hispanic Americans Report Growing Disillusionment with the American Dream

A 2026 Public Religion Research Institute survey found only 40 % of Hispanic adults in the United States still believe the American Dream—hard work leading to success—is attainable, down from 52 % two years earlier. The same study shows 68 % feel ICE agents make their communities less safe, and 56 % describe themselves as strangers in their own country. Lower national pride among Hispanics—42 % feel very or extremely proud of being American versus 51 % of the general population—correlates with this loss of faith. The decline is not linked to party affiliation; Hispanic Democrats, Republicans, and independents share similar views. These attitudes could undermine Republican gains among Hispanic voters in the 2026 midterm elections, where the party’s recent surge depends on perceived security and economic stability for Hispanic families.
