Kenya's Arid Lands to Benefit from Water Bunds Project
WHY IT MATTERS
This project aims to scale the adoption of water bunds efficiently and equitably across Kenya's diverse tenure contexts and governance settings, addressing the compounding pressures faced by the country's arid and semi-arid lands.
What happened
Kenya's arid and semi-arid lands face compounding pressures from land degradation, erratic rainfall, and drought.
To address this, the Scaling Water Bunds for Climate Resilience Management in Kenyan Rainfed Agri-Food Systems (SWaRM) project will implement water bunds, simple semi-circular earthen structures that capture rainwater and reduce runoff.
The four-year project, funded by the Netherlands-CGIAR Water-Food Nexus Research Program, will combine economic analysis, impact evaluation, and multi-stakeholder platform facilitation to inform Kenya's Land Reclamation Policy and generate transferable lessons for sub-Saharan Africa's drylands.
