Hong Kong Launches Public Consultation on Sweetener Regulation Amendments

The Hong Kong Government has opened a three‑month public consultation on proposed amendments to the Sweeteners in Food Regulations. The changes, reviewed by the Environment & Ecology Bureau and the Food & Environmental Hygiene Department’s Centre for Food Safety, aim to update safety standards and align local rules with the Codex Alimentarius. Key provisions include bringing polyhydric alcohols under regulatory scope, expanding the list of permitted sweeteners, setting maximum levels for sweetener‑food pairs, and making technical adjustments. The Expert Committee on Food Safety supports the proposals, and the Legislative Council Panel on Food Safety & Environmental Hygiene gave general approval in June. An 18‑month transition period will follow legislative approval. Members of the public may submit written views by December 4 via email, fax, or post, and the government will hold consultation forums to gather further input.
