Australia pledges $15 million to aid Nepal’s flood recovery and resilience
WHY IT MATTERS
The aid will help Nepal rebuild critical infrastructure, improve disaster preparedness, and support families of missing Australians, strengthening bilateral ties and regional stability.
What happened
On 8 October 2026, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong welcomed Nepali Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal in Melbourne to discuss Nepal’s recovery from the devastating floods, the search for missing Australians, and the broader bilateral relationship. Australia will provide an additional $15 million to rebuild destroyed infrastructure, restore essential services, and strengthen early warning systems to reduce future flood risk.
This follows an earlier $11 million contribution that supported immediate response efforts, including humanitarian relief through Australian NGOs, the World Food Programme, and specialist drone search and rescue. Australians have also donated over $20 million since 26 August to appeals by the Emergency Action Alliance, the Red Cross and other NGOs.
Australian officials are working closely with Nepal and China to locate the 34 Australians who remain unaccounted for, with liaison officers offering regular updates to families. Australia remains committed to supporting Nepal’s recovery, seeking information on missing citizens, and standing with affected communities.
