Reddit to Require Login for All Users, CEO Announces
WHY IT MATTERS
By forcing login, Reddit gains richer user data for precise advertising, increases engagement, and strengthens compliance with data‑protection laws, positioning the platform for higher revenue and safer user experience.
What happened
Reddit will no longer allow anonymous browsing. CEO Steve Huffman announced the change in a shareholder letter, stating the platform will become a logged‑in‑only experience. The move aims to improve user experience by tailoring content and communities to logged‑in members.
It also gives Reddit more data signals for ad targeting, which should boost revenue. Logged‑in users tend to engage more, helping the company retain new members.
The policy will protect Reddit’s extensive data corpus and help the company adapt to evolving global regulations. The change will take effect in the coming months, and Reddit will likely roll out new login prompts across all devices.
