Renewed Fighting in Northern Ethiopia
WHY IT MATTERS
The renewed conflict in northern Ethiopia raises concerns for the safety and access to healthcare for civilians, with MSF monitoring community displacement and preparing to respond to the needs of displaced people in Tigray, Amhara, and Afar regions.
What happened
Conflict between the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) and the Ethiopian National Defence Forces has resumed in northern Ethiopia. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams have increased medical response activities to address the rise in war-wounded patients.
Since 22 September, MSF teams have seen a significant increase in patients at hospitals in Korem, Alamata, and Shire. The number of war-wounded patients received at Korem and Alamata hospitals rose from around 180 to over 420 between 22 and 25 September.
MSF teams are supporting healthcare activities in hospitals in Shire, Sheraro, and Korem, including maternal and child health care. Due to the security situation, activities at Alamata hospital have been suspended, and outreach activities have been redirected to provide additional support to hospitals.
