Renewed hostilities in northern Ethiopia: mixed migration consequences
WHY IT MATTERS
The renewed hostilities in northern Ethiopia have significant implications for mixed migration and displacement, with over 1 million refugees already hosted in Ethiopia and Ethiopians on the move. The conflict is also part of a larger regional crisis, with the Horn of Africa being described as 'combustible' by the International Crisis Group.
What happened
Northern Ethiopia is experiencing a resurgence of active hostilities, with the regional alignments different from the previous war in Tigray. The conflict has led to internal displacement and involuntary immobility, with around 150,000 people displaced in Afar alone in recent weeks.
Refugees in Ethiopia, particularly Eritreans, face risks of arbitrary detention, forced recruitment, trafficking, and forced return due to the change in regional alignments.
The conflict is also affecting Sudanese refugees, who fled one war only to find themselves next to another.
