Marshall Islands Launches Roadmap to Strengthen Health and Coastal Infrastructure Resilience
WHY IT MATTERS
The roadmap equips a small island nation with a practical, inclusive strategy to safeguard critical health and coastal assets against climate change, ensuring community resilience and uninterrupted essential services.
What happened
The Republic of the Marshall Islands, together with UNOPS, unveiled a comprehensive Roadmap for Health and Coastal Infrastructure Resilience aimed at keeping essential services operational amid rising sea levels and extreme weather. The plan, built on detailed vulnerability studies, aligns with the country’s National Strategic Plan, National Adaptation Plan, and Sustainable Development Goals.
It sets out six priority actions, including climate‑proofing outer‑island health clinics, upgrading the Majuro Airport‑to‑Laura Road corridor, establishing a geospatial asset system, scaling nature‑based coastal protection, enhancing emergency shelter readiness, and improving long‑term maintenance. Inclusive design principles ensure that women, people with disabilities, and older residents receive equitable access.
The launch, attended by senior ministry officials and representatives from the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, highlighted the roadmap as a starting point for coordinated resilience investment supported by the Infrastructure Resilience Accelerator Fund.
